I was lucky enough to take a tour of the Po Delta in my formative birding years. During a midwinter trip to the delta, accompanied by the proverbial Padanian fog, we managed to rack up an impressive daily total, spiced up by a constant trickle of fascinating facts about the delta, its people, culture and customs. I vividly remember seeing my first ever Great Bittern during our trip, something of a dream bird for me at the time. The fact that Menotti was almost as enthusiastic as I was just goes to demonstrate his passion for birds and guiding, which is definitely more than “just a job” for him.
